Statistics

Suicide Statistics

Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death. In 2022, there were 49,476  reported suicide deaths, with an estimated 1.6 million suicide attempts occurring that year. Among youth in grades 9-12, approximately  10% reported having made at least one suicide attempt within the past year. Suicide ranks as the  2nd leading cause of death among individuals aged 10-14, highlighting a critical area for prevention efforts.

Domestic Violence

Approximately 1 in 3 women (30%) and 1 in 4 men (25%) globally experience physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner during their lifetime. Women aged 18-24 are most commonly affected by intimate partner violence. 

Over 275 million children worldwide witness domestic violence annually, which can lead to developmental challenges, emotional trauma, and perpetuation of the cycle of abuse.

Nearly 38% of female homicides worldwide are committed by an intimate partner.

Bullying

Approximately 20% of students aged 12-18 in the United States report being bullied at school , with the most common locations for bullying include hallways or stairwells (43%), classrooms (42%), cafeterias (27%), and outside school grounds (22%). 

Bullying peaks during middle school years (grades 6-8), with nearly 28% of middle schoolers reporting incidents , compared to 16% in high school.

Cyberbullying

Studies indicate that approximately 37% of young people aged 12-17 have been victims of cyberbullying globally . This number varies by region, with higher rates reported in countries with widespread internet access.

In the United States alone, around 15% of high school students report being bullied online or via text messages annually , according to surveys conducted by the CDC.

Research shows that around 20% of teens who experience cyberbullying consider suicide , while about 10% attempt it.

Mental Health

1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, which translates to approximately  22.8% of adults, equating to about 57.8 million people 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness annually, representing around  5.5%, or approximately 14.1 million people . Among youth aged 6-17, about 1 in 6 experience a mental health disorder each year, which was recorded as  16.5%, affecting around 7.7 million children and adolescents .

Discrimination

Approximately 17% of individuals will engage in self-harm at some point in their lives. The average age for the first incident of self-harm is around  13 years old, coinciding with the onset of adolescence when individuals face increased stressors. 45%  of those who attempt self harm report cutting at their primary method.
